Club Championships – they bring out the best in golf and golfers !
It’s a well-accepted view that golfers can significantly “lift” their game when challenged, by the status of the event or by another player in the field.
Golf at Te Marua on Sunday 19th gave us a great demonstration of that scenario.
The Men’s Matchplay Championships, R2, the Senior division, Chris Hislop (qualifier #9) vs Owen Lloyd (qualifier #1) – not exactly close on the H/C front (Chris 6.2, Owen +3.5) but Matchplay Championships are played “off the stick” – Course H/C does not come into the equation.
Chris found some of his best golf for Owen and pushed Owen into producing one of his significantly better rounds of late.
All square after 3 holes, Chris slipped on #4 and triggered Owen into a string of birdies and a 5-up lead in the match after 9.
Chris stayed with the challenge and returned par for the next few holes but birdies are very hard to beat (or even equal) – Owen continued to deliver birdies and took the match 7/6, a big win for sure, but a great effort by Chris too, lifting his game to meet the challenge and returning an 18-hole score better than the Handicapper would expect, a very noteworthy 76.
Congratulations Owen, an impressive set of numbers adding up to an impressive 18-hole score of 62 (29 for the first 9, 33 for the second), a convincing win in the Championships match and a performance which has likely put fear into the heart of your next opponent (Jamie R.)
