Shootout 2023

Saturday 11th November 2023

The 2023 Men’s AND Women’s Shootout Finals, sponsored by The Outdoors Hut, are scheduled to be played tomorrow.

For those unfamiliar with this competition, the final is a single round, hole-by-hole knock-out competition. Qualifying for the final is based on the total of each player’s best 10 Stableford scores returned from eligible rounds through the year.

Scoring for the Final uses the Net Score for each player on a hole-by-hole basis. The player with the highest NET SCORE for the hole will be ‘retired’. If there is a tie for the highest score, the toss of a coin will decide if there will be a chip-off or putt-off and under both options, player furthest from the hole will be the one to give their golf clubs a break.

Play in the Men’s Final will start from #1 tee with one group of 19 players. Hole #2 will be played with 18 players, #3 with 17 players and on it goes all the way to #18 which will be down to 2 players shooting for the top prize.  The Women’s Final follows the same format but as there are fewer participants, play will start from a different tee a bit later in the day (tee and time TBA).

For both events, we need a few volunteer helpers please, primarily to mark the position of balls when they have landed on the green. Typically, 2 or 3 helpers for the first few holes (not the entire day). As the round progresses and participants are knocked out of the event, they are expected to stick around for at least another 2 holes to assist with the ball-marking role – and see what could have been – which means there is no expectation on volunteer helpers to commit to the whole day. If you can help us for an hour or two through the initial holes, or even later in the round, please contact the Shop – e-mail to Shop@temaruagolfclub.co.nz or by phone (04)526 7020.

The Men’s Final will start at 8:30 am and based on past years, it takes approximately 1 hour for the 19-strong group to complete the first hole and best part of 6 hours to complete the 18 holes.

For golfers NOT involved in the Shootout Final, the course will be OPEN to ALL players from 9:30 am BUT it is almost guaranteed that players starting anywhere from 9:30 through to 11:30 will catch up to – and be stalled by – one of Shootout Final groups.

In that situation, players will have to bypass the hole being played by Shootout Group and then adopt 1 of 2 options:

1. Play the hole later in their round (e.g. If the Shootout group is playing #2, bypass #2, play #3 – #7 and play #2 before continuing your round from #8.)

2. Skip the hole altogether and on their scorecard give themselves a 2-Stableford-points score for that hole
