The BLOB – 4th March 2016

Morning everyone,

We now have PLACING on fairway.

Please ask at the counter if your membership card has arrived.

Programme books have arrived for you to pick up.

NZ Golf Rule books are here also for you to pick up.

The Army loved their six days at our beautiful course, we heard nothing but good comments, they wanted me to pass on to the green-keepers their thanks for starting early to prepare the greens for them each day, were very impressed with the lunches, they also would like to thanks the ladies (di and me) in the office/shop for their assistance and wonderful service over the six days.

Victoria University also wrote a letter expressing their thanks to all concerned for the running of their tournament, their highly competitive field enjoyed the course, service and meal, and are now in discussions with alumni staff for a larger event next year.  So thanks to Dave, John and staff, Maree, Grahame and staff, plus office staff for your goodwill and support.

It’s sad to inform you all that the last Professional Golfer attached to Te Marua Golf Club has passed away recently and many of our members would have been unaware of his passing.

David Wickens was our resident Professional when the current cart shed was operated as the “Pro Shop”.  When he left, club member Bruce Hicks took the position as Secretary/Manager and continued running the shop as his business as well as being our Secretary/Manager.  When Bruce Hicks left, the “Pro Shop” interior was gutted and golf sales relocated to the main building.  Max Kinsey eventually became our Secretary/Manager.

David Wickens passed away peacefully on 7th February 2016 suddenly but peacefully in Masterton.  His funeral service took place at Whenua Tapu Chapel, Plimmerton on 12th February 2016.

As a matter of interest Steve Williams (Caddy) book entitled “Out of the Rough” mentions David Wickens on Page #17.

Twilight Golf has now finished, probably just in time as it was getting pretty dark by the time they all came in.  2016 Teams Twilight winning team was BLACK TEES which team players have been Tom Hunter, Joe Brophy, Topi Wirihana, Mal Polglase, Jason Bevan, Max Kinsey, Ray Randle, Allan Old, they only just won by two points, chopping on their heels were CONSTRUCTABLES (not living up to their name) which team members were the SHERWIN CLAN, Gary, Ian, Grant Gould and Blake Redmond.

The competition ran over 6 weeks, on 6 Thursdays evenings of fantastic weather – and some good golfing.  22, 23, 24 stableford points were not unusual.  It is a combination of single and pairs matchplay on Stableford overall competition and weekly team Stableford scores using the best 3 scores from the team of 4.  The Black Tees took full advantage of employing the substitution rule  – any 4 players for any week!!!!! A good time was had by all, especially the non-golfers, who have all said they enjoy the golf, the people and the after match function, especially the fabulous meals delivered by Maree, Grahame and Paige – they are I in a million.  Thanks also to Peter Gallen who organized this event.

Thanks to all for your support – keep the November/December Business House Twilight tournament in mind and we look forward to seeing all of you for that event – if not before.

Monday 14th March we are hosting the National Party Tournament, this starts at 12.30pm, multi tee start.

Have you registered for the St Pat’s day tournament on Thursday 17th March??, registrations for this big day will be closed off soon.

For Easter Weekend I have opened up a start sheet for the Friday and Monday for everyone to book on line.  Mixed Stableford and Two’s have been set up for both days.

Our Roaring Forties Club has started up again, thank you to everyone that has entered, this is a fundraiser to purchase some more outside tables, plus replace the seating in front of the cart shed.  The concept of the game is if the number you have picked is the Bonus number drawn on SATURDAY night’s Lotto draw ( 12th March) you win $100.00, if you happen to have the number either side of the bonus number you get $50.00, it runs for 10 weeks, $10.00 a week or $100 for the 10 weeks.  30 out of the 40 numbers will win.  Will it be your number?????  This is fun and a great fundraiser.  I will be liaising with Dave Sully about the purchasing and the placing of the tables and seating, Allan Old (treasurer) will be overseeing income and expenditure spreadsheet and receipts.  Roaring Forties STARTS on SATURDAY 12TH MARCH.  CASH only when paying for your number, if I am not here put it into an envelope with your name on it and get the office staff to put into my folder, I know a few participants are away for a few weeks – just pay when you are back –  I have a spreadsheet set up with everyone’s name, number and payment details.  GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE.
